This enrollment period is often confused with AEP.
They are not the same.
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) generally runs from January 1 through March 31.
But it applies only to individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
What You Can Do During OEP
If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be able to:
- Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan
- Leave Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
- Enroll in a Part D plan if returning to Original Medicare
You cannot switch from Original Medicare into Medicare Advantage during this window unless you qualify for a separate enrollment period.
What You Cannot Do During OEP
The OEP is specifically for current Medicare Advantage enrollees. It does not allow:
- Switching from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (unless you qualify for an SEP)
- Enrolling in Medicare Advantage for the first time if you never had it
- Unlimited plan changes - you can only make one change during this period
Why OEP Exists
Sometimes people enroll during AEP and then realize:
- Their doctor isn't in-network
- A prescription isn't covered as expected
- The structure isn't a fit
OEP provides a limited opportunity to make a correction.
When Changes Take Effect
Changes made during OEP typically take effect the first day of the month following your enrollment.
For example:
- Enroll in February → coverage starts March 1
- Enroll in March → coverage starts April 1
Important Clarification
You can only use OEP once per year.
It's not an unlimited adjustment period.
And changes typically take effect the first day of the month after enrollment.
How OEP Differs from AEP
| AEP | OEP | |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | Oct 15 – Dec 7 | Jan 1 – Mar 31 |
| Who Can Use It | All Medicare beneficiaries | Only current MA enrollees |
| Changes Take Effect | January 1 | First of following month |
| Changes Allowed | Multiple reviews; one enrollment | One change only |
Final Thought
OEP isn't about plan shopping.
It's about alignment correction.
If you enrolled in Medicare Advantage and something doesn't feel right, it may be worth reviewing your options.
Carefully. Calmly. Within the rules.
