UnitedHealthcare Medicare in Texas

UnitedHealthcare is one of the largest Medicare Advantage carriers in Texas, with plan availability across nearly every Texas county. UHC also offers AARP-branded Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans and standalone Part D prescription drug plans across the state.

Texas is geographically large enough that UnitedHealthcare's network strength varies sharply by region. The same UHC plan may be strong in Houston's Texas Medical Center area and thin in El Paso, or vice versa. We pull plans by your specific Texas ZIP and check the providers you actually use.

We're independent. We compare UHC against Humana, Aetna, BCBS Texas, Cigna, and the other carriers we represent. If UnitedHealthcare fits your situation best, we'll tell you honestly. If another carrier fits better, we'll tell you that too.

What's worth knowing about UnitedHealthcare in TX

UHC's TX network strength varies by metro. UnitedHealthcare's Houston network may include Memorial Hermann, Methodist, MD Anderson, or Texas Children's at different tiers depending on the plan. Dallas plans may favor Texas Health, Methodist, or Baylor Scott & White. San Antonio plans have their own network mix. We check by ZIP and by facility.

AARP-branded Medigap is a UHC product. AARP-branded Medicare Supplement plans in Texas are underwritten by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company. The standardized plan letters (Plan G, Plan N, Plan F for those eligible) cover the same benefits as any other carrier's same-letter plan. The differences are premium, rate-history pattern, and AARP membership requirement.

OptumRx is the UHC pharmacy benefit manager. UnitedHealthcare Medicare plans with bundled drug coverage typically use OptumRx for pharmacy network management. Optum's mail-order pharmacy is usually preferred. Retail preferred pharmacies vary by plan, but commonly include CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Kroger. Worth checking against the pharmacy you actually use.

Plan year changes apply. UHC can change networks, formularies, and cost-sharing each plan year. The Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) you get each fall is worth opening. Last year's right plan may not be this year's right plan.

Common questions about UnitedHealthcare Medicare in Texas

Does UnitedHealthcare offer Medicare Advantage plans in Texas?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare offers Medicare Advantage plans across nearly every Texas county, typically including HMO, PPO, and Special Needs Plan options. Specific plan availability, premiums, and provider networks vary by county and ZIP code, and they change every plan year.

Does my UHC Medicare Advantage plan in Texas include MD Anderson?

It depends on the specific plan. MD Anderson Cancer Center accepts Medicare and is included on some UnitedHealthcare Texas Medicare Advantage plans, sometimes at preferred tier and sometimes for select services only. If MD Anderson access is a priority, this is worth checking before enrollment. Original Medicare plus an AARP Medigap plan accepts MD Anderson without the network puzzle.

Is AARP Medicare Supplement the same as UnitedHealthcare Medigap in Texas?

Yes. AARP-branded Medicare Supplement plans in Texas are underwritten by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company. The plans are the standardized federal Medigap letters (Plan G, Plan N, Plan F for those eligible). Benefits inside any letter are identical across all carriers; the AARP/UHC version differs in premium, rate-history pattern, and AARP membership requirement.

Does my UHC Texas plan let me fill at H-E-B Pharmacy?

Sometimes. H-E-B Pharmacy is included on many Medicare Advantage plans' pharmacy networks across Texas, but whether H-E-B is the preferred (lower copay) tier or the standard (higher copay) tier varies by plan. Same question applies to CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Tom Thumb, and Brookshire's. We check pharmacy network fit against the chains you actually use.

Do you only sell UnitedHealthcare plans in Texas?

No. We're an independent agency. We represent multiple carriers in Texas and compare them against each other based on your doctors, prescriptions, and budget. UnitedHealthcare may or may not be the best fit for your situation. We tell you honestly either way.

Are you connected to UnitedHealthcare or to Medicare?

No. The Right Choice Agency is an independent licensed insurance agency that represents multiple carriers including UnitedHealthcare. We are not connected with or endorsed by the United States government or the federal Medicare program. UnitedHealthcare contracts with the federal Medicare program to offer plans, but UnitedHealthcare is a private company, not a government program. For information on all your options, contact Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE.

If your current UnitedHealthcare plan still fits, we tell you to stay

We don't do paperwork on the first call. We pull what's available in your Texas ZIP from UnitedHealthcare and the other carriers we represent, check your doctors and prescriptions against each plan's actual provider directory and formulary, factor in regional metro network differences, and walk through the tradeoffs. If your current UHC plan is the right one, we tell you to stay where you are. That's the whole pitch.
