Medigap Plan N in Texas

Plan N is a standardized Medigap plan that covers most of the Medicare gaps at a lower premium than Plan G. The tradeoff: small copays at office visits (up to $20) and ER visits that don't result in admission (up to $50), plus Plan N doesn't cover Part B excess charges (relevant only with providers who don't accept Medicare assignment).

In Texas, Plan N's federal benefits are identical across every carrier that sells it. The differences live in premium, rate-history pattern, household-discount eligibility, and underwriting rules outside guaranteed-issue periods.

We're independent. We compare Plan N premiums across the carriers we represent in your TX ZIP and walk you through whether the lower premium beats Plan G's broader coverage given your specific usage. If your current Plan N is competitively priced, we tell you to stay.

What Plan N covers in TX

Plan N covers most Medicare gaps with small copays. Plan N pays your share of Part A coinsurance and copays, the Part A hospital deductible, blood (first 3 pints), skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and Part B coinsurance with the exception of small copays (up to $20 for office visits, up to $50 for ER visits that don't result in admission).

Plan N does NOT cover Part B excess charges. If you see a provider who doesn't accept Medicare assignment, that provider can charge up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount as an 'excess charge.' Plan N doesn't cover this. Plan G does. In practice, the vast majority of providers accept Medicare assignment, so excess charges are rarely a real issue. Worth knowing about, not worth panicking about.

Federal benefits are identical across carriers. Plan N from one carrier covers exactly the same benefits as Plan N from any other carrier. The federal government standardizes the benefits inside each Medigap letter. What differs between carriers is the premium, household discounts, and rate-history.

No network. Drug coverage is separate. Plan N doesn't have a network. Any Medicare provider who accepts Medicare is in-network for you. Plan N (like every Medigap letter) doesn't include prescription drug coverage, so you need a standalone Part D plan alongside.

Common questions about Plan N in Texas

What does Medigap Plan N cover in Texas?

Plan N's benefits are federally standardized and identical across every Medigap carrier. Plan N covers Part A coinsurance and copays, the Part A deductible, blood, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and Part B coinsurance with copays (up to $20 office visit, up to $50 non-admitted ER). It does NOT cover Part B excess charges. It covers 80% of foreign travel emergency care.

Plan N vs Plan G in Texas. Which is cheaper overall?

Plan N has a lower monthly premium than Plan G but you pay the office-visit and ER copays. Whether Plan N is cheaper overall depends on how often you visit doctors and whether the premium savings exceed the annual copay total.

For someone who sees doctors infrequently, Plan N can save several hundred dollars a year. For someone with frequent specialist visits, Plan G's higher premium often nets out lower because there are no per-visit copays. We can walk through the math based on your typical usage.

What are Part B excess charges and should I worry about them on Plan N in Texas?

Part B excess charges happen only when a provider doesn't accept Medicare assignment and charges up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount. Plan N doesn't cover excess charges; Plan G does.

In practice, the vast majority of US providers accept Medicare assignment, so excess charges rarely come up. If you see specialists who specifically don't accept assignment (which you can check), Plan G's excess-charge coverage is worth the premium difference. Otherwise, it usually isn't.

How much does Plan N cost in Texas?

Plan N premiums vary by carrier, your age, your ZIP code, and (in some carriers) tobacco use and gender. Premiums are typically lower than Plan G but the gap varies. We can pull current rates from the carriers we represent in your ZIP.

Does Plan N cover my prescriptions in Texas?

No. Medigap Plan N (like every Medigap letter) does not cover prescription drugs. You need a standalone Medicare Part D plan alongside Plan N. We help pair the right Part D plan with your Plan N.

Are you connected to Medicare or to a specific Medigap carrier?

No. The Right Choice Agency is an independent licensed insurance agency. We are not connected with or endorsed by the United States government, the federal Medicare program, or the Texas state government. Plan N can save real money. Worth the math

Plan N's lower premium beats Plan G if your office-visit count is low enough. We compare Plan N and Plan G premiums across the Texas carriers we represent, factor in your typical doctor visit frequency, and tell you which letter saves you more over a year. If your current Plan N is competitively priced, we tell you to stay.
