Medicare Advantage in Virginia

Medicare Advantage plans are bundled Medicare coverage offered by private carriers approved by Medicare. In Virginia, the major regional hospital systems (Inova, Sentara, Carilion Clinic, VCU Health, UVA Health) carry different in-network status across Medicare Advantage carriers. The plan that fits depends on which providers you actually use.

Virginia has a large veteran and federal-employee population, so coordination with VA benefits, TRICARE For Life, and FEHB is a recurring question. We can flag the basics if it's relevant to your situation.

We pull what's actually available in your VA ZIP and run your doctors and prescriptions against each plan's actual provider directory and formulary. If your current MA plan still fits, we tell you to stay.

What's worth knowing about Medicare Advantage in VA

Hospital networks vary across Virginia. Medicare Advantage networks are built county by county and carrier by carrier. Inova, Sentara, Carilion Clinic, VCU Health, UVA Health are not all in-network on the same plan. We check by plan and by specific facility.

Specialist tier doesn't always match hospital tier. A surgeon, cardiologist, or oncologist who admits at an in-network hospital may be on a different network tier than the hospital itself. We pull the actual provider directory and check the doctors you see by name.

Drug coverage is bundled (usually). Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D drug coverage. Each plan has its own formulary, tier list, and pharmacy network. The plan with the lowest premium isn't always the one with the lowest total cost when your specific medications are factored in.

Plan year changes. Carriers can change networks, formularies, and cost-sharing every plan year. The Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) you get each fall is worth opening. The plan that fit you last year may not fit this year.

Common questions about Medicare Advantage in Virginia

Are there Medicare Advantage plans available in Virginia?

Yes. Most Virginia counties have a selection of Medicare Advantage plans from major carriers. The specific plans, premiums, and provider networks vary by county and ZIP code, and they change every plan year.

Does my Medicare Advantage plan in VA cover the hospital systems I use?

It depends on the plan. Inova, Sentara, Carilion Clinic, VCU Health, UVA Health carry different in-network status across Medicare Advantage carriers. Some plans include several at preferred tier, some include only one. We pull the actual provider directory and check by facility.

Can I switch Medicare Advantage plans during the year in Virginia?

Outside the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7), you can usually change plans only during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31), which lets you switch from one MA plan to another or back to Original Medicare with a Part D plan. Special Enrollment Periods can open up after qualifying life events.

How is a Medicare Advantage plan different from Medigap in Virginia?

Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare. You get your benefits through the carrier, often with bundled drug coverage, and you stay inside the plan's network for full coverage.

Medigap supplements Original Medicare. You stay on Original Medicare and the supplement pays the gaps. There's no network because Original Medicare accepts any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. Medigap requires a separate Part D plan for prescriptions.

The right answer depends on your providers, your tolerance for variable costs, your travel patterns, and your prescriptions. We walk through both honestly.
